Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between pistol and rifle grade steel?

There is no difference… if you are using AR500 for all of your targets. The difference emerges when you have a manufacturer who uses a lower grade steel for handgun targets than with rifle targets. While the lower rated steel is less expensive and is sufficient for most handgun calibers, it will pit and damage when impacted with higher velocity caliber projectiles. AR500 is exceptional for both rifle and handgun shooting, however, it is recommended to separate and designate targets to be used for rifle training and handgun training.

Can I use the same targets for shotgun, pistol and rifle shooting?

As stated above, it is recommended to separate and designate targets to be used for rifle training and handgun training. Our static handgun series plates will endure years of abuse from virtually any handgun caliber and shotgun ammunition. STS has specifically designed targets intended for rifle shooting.

What kind of training courses does STS offer?

Special Tactical Services , LLC offers a wide variety of world class training from Firearms to Evasive Driving and Protective Operations. Visit our website for a complete list and outline of courses available. www.spectacserv.com

You can contact STS Targets, LLC with any questions you have about steel targets, steel target shooting and how to make your range a safer place to train. Contact us

Will STS design a range that optimizes my training?

Absolutely. STS has the capability and experience to design and implement a range to fit your training needs from very basic with permanent static systems to advanced computer controlled systems. Contact us for more details.

How long will your targets last?

Any target, no matter what grade of steel is used, will eventually pit and flex from the repetitive high energy impact that it is subjected to; causing it to either brake or damage to the point that it becomes unsafe for continued use and therefore, needing to be replaced. The goal is to maximize the life of a target through textile and design. We've done our homework. STS Targets, LLC will outlast and outperform any target systems on the market today. We guarantee it!

What is “frag” or “high velocity fragmentation”?

Frag (ricochet, splatter) is any piece of a projectile or target material that is deflected in a direction other than which it was originally traveling and can be extremely dangerous. There are many important measures that should be taken to help pattern the frag and minimize the amount that could be returned to the firing line. Our handgun series plates have a 15 degree deflection angle to direct frag down toward the ground. The ground surface your targets are placed on should be conducive to absorbing high speed fragmentation. For more information about steel shooting and range safety please contact us . We will be more than happy to help you make your range a safe place to train. (IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION)

Can STS Targets, LLC customize and design a target for me?

If you have a target idea or a question, contact our design team. STS Targets has custom designed targets for many of our clients. We will help materialize your idea into a training reality.
