Safety Information
STEEL RANGE PRODUCTS
WARNING: There are many critical considerations in using steel targets safely besides the information on this page. We build the safest steel targets we know of, but their safe use depends on you. Since we cannot supervise or control the use of our steel products, we neither imply nor accept any liability related to their use or misuse. Failure to follow the guidelines below can result in serious injury or death !
Shooting at Steel Targets can be hazardous! Jacketed service ammunition is particularly dangerous. When firing metallic ammunition (lead, jacketed, or plated), the shooter and observer distance to steel targets must be at least 25 yards. Steel targets may send bullet fragmentation back towards the firing line. Wrap-around Eye Protection, Ear Protection, long sleeved shirts and long pants must be worn by anyone within 75 yards of the steel targets.
STS Targets, LLC are angled to deflect bullet fragmentations downward upon impact. However, if the steel target system is improperly installed, misplaced or shot while falling, hazardous bullet ricochet or high velocity fragmentation can be deflected back towards the shooter(s) or toward the ceiling, walls, and floor in an indoor range. Extreme caution should be taken to properly position steel targets on the firing range(s) to minimize ricocheting of bullet fragments back to the firing line. The surface a target is placed upon can have a tremendous impact on safety. We recommend placing them on loose dirt or sand to absorb fragmentation and minimize ricochet from entering the safety zone. Do not place them on cement, asphalt, hard-packed clay, rocks, gravel or other hard surfaces. For safety on hard or questionable surfaces, erect a barrier – such as a railroad tie wall, wooden wall filled with pea gravel, or use our deflector wall – in front of the target(s). All Range Safety Rules must be observed.
All of the intended strike surfaces of STS Target systems are made from 3/8”AR500 through – hardened steel. (Unless Otherwise Noted ). This steel will withstand extremely heavy use from virtually any handgun ammunition and shotgun shells without damage to the plate. However we recommend the use of lead free composite (non-metallic) frangible ammunition that disintegrates upon impact and virtually eliminates fragmentation and metallic splatter. Do NOT use steel shot or Armor Piercing ammunition!
NOTICE: Do NOT fire rifle ammunition or shotgun slugs closer than 100 yards. We highly recommend the use of our “Rifle Grade” Target Systems designed specifically for the repeated use of rifle caliber ammunition (.223 Rem, .308 Win, 300 Winmag, & 30-06). We highly recommend never firing handgun ammunition or performing handgun training on any rifle target system(s) once it has been used for rifle training. Please call with any questions you may have related to the safe use of any STS Target System(s).
